Two sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide into the Earth.
by Grant McAvaney
Have you ever thought things were so bad you just wanted the world to end? That's exactly the premise that director Lars Von Trier explores in his latest orgiastic feast of darkness, Melancholia.
Following the stunning opening sequence that shows the end of planet earth, the film is split into two acts, and follows some of the final days of two sisters, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg). What begins as a seemingly romantic tale of a fun-loving married couple at their wedding reception soon turns into a rampage of self-destruction on Justine's part, as, all the while, the planet of Melancholia heads towards the path of earth.
But be under no misapprehension — this is not your usual end-of-the-world movie in the vein of Deep Impact and The Day After Tomorrow that ends with the usual 'triumph of the human spirit' diatribe.
Rather, this is an intense surrealist character piece that is more concerned with the way in which people cope with sadness and depression, and the uncanny ability of humans to continually redefine loneliness so that they always feel alone. For that reason, not everyone will love this film.
Despite the lack of action, this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time, despite the inevitable conclusion. While the acting performance of Dunst has (rightfully) been celebrated, Gainsbourg is unremittingly convincing as the 'stronger' sister (or is she?).
Casting this aside, the film stands independently from its actors as a work of art worth watching — it's beautifully shot and original, and reminds us why Von Trier is both controversial yet widely respected.
With the wealth of popcorn snores making their way to cinemas for the holiday break, it is a relief to see this film appear on Now Showing lists.
WHAT fresh outrage and hilarity can we expect from Sacha Baron Cohen in his latest transformation?
