13 is lucky for some

SOME recognise 13 as an unlucky number - not Kev and Enid Peters though.

The happy couple, who on Thursday marked 60 years together, have 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, while Kev was the 13th child born in his family and his mother and one of his sons were born on the 13th of the month.

With so many 13s going on amid such a happy marriage, Mr Peters seems to think the bad press is a bit unwarranted.

"We are still very much in love," a proud Mr Peters said of he and his wife.

The pair sang in the same choir when they first made eye contact in the late 1940s.

"She was the prettiest woman on Tivoli Hill and I was the envy of a lot of jokers around town," Mr Peters recalled.

"Somehow she managed to see past my big ears."

They eventually married at St John's Church, on Denmark Hill, on March 22, 1952.

Enid spent a week's wages - four pounds - on Kev's ring, while Kev paid the rest of the wedding expenses.

The couple raised three boys and three girls on a watermelon farm near the junction of the Bremer and Brisbane rivers.

"Fair dinkum - they've been such a wonderful family," Mr Peters said.

After being wiped out by hail storms in successive years, Mr and Mrs Peters moved to a house at Leichhardt about 36 years ago and have stayed there ever since.

They were immensely proud to have received letters of congratulations from the Queen, Prime Minister, the Governor General, Premier and Mayor.

Kev, 83 and Enid, 80, celebrated the special occasion with family.
