A CHAIR is never ordinary to Erick Buma.
The BizFurn Express general manager has now designed and manufactured the ideal chair for medical and aged care specialists at the company's Yandina workshop.
A shipment of 205 chairs went to the Gold Coast University Hospital this week after more than a year in development.
"About 18 months ago I was at a hospital and noticed there were some patient lounges which were in a bad state of disrepair," Mr Buma said.
"It wasn't until then that I thought about designing a patient lounge. I realised there was an obvious need in the market, so we went about re-designing the patient lounge from the ground up to make a better unit.
"It has been made, tested and manufactured on the Sunshine Coast."
The patient chairs sent to the Gold Coast can hold a maximum of 250kg while the bariatric lounge can take up to 350kg.
Specialty features include breathable polyurethane covering 25mm thick memory foam, to meet wound car requirements, adjustable arms and increased stability.
The design was created with input from seven different departments at Nambour Hospital.
Mr Buma hoped the chairs would be snapped up by hospitals across Australia.
"I took the chairs to a health and aged care expo in Sydney and the response was tremendous," Mr Buma said.
"There is nothing else like this on the market."
