Classic car auction draws buyers from US, Dubai

AN unreserved auction of classic cars from a museum near Toowoomba is drawing inquiries from across the world.

The Queensland Auto Museum is permanently closed and an unreserved auction of its rare classic vehicles and memorabilia will take place on Saturday at Hampton.

Lloyds Auctioneers & Valuers auctioneer Bill Hoffman said a car collector from Mississippi had expressed an interest in the collection of about 130 cars, thought to be worth more than $1 million.

"He wants to bid on two cars and wanted to know what the process was, what he had to do and how we can assist him with transport," he said.

Mr Hoffman said the auction had generated interest worldwide including inquiries from far-flung places like Dubai in the Middle East.

He challenged anyone to find another auction of its type.

"In this collection there's one of the very first Brock Commodores and there's a 1977 Torana SS hatchback, that's a highly sought after car."

Other special cars include Joe Bjelke-Petersen's personal Jaguar and a replica of Slim Dusty's 1935 caravan "Bumbling Bertha''.

Mr Hoffman said holding an unreserved auction was not unusual and was largely driven by the owner.

"He wants everyone to enjoy the cars, the collection got too big for him.

"The owner wants people driving the cars - that's what he did when the collection was smaller.

"He wants to give everyone the opportunity to purchase a piece of Australian history.

"The owner has put up the whole collection unreserved, whether it's $1, $10 or $10,000, whoever is the last bidder will own it."

Internet bidding will take place and buyers can also bid live at the site at the Queensland Auto Museum, 67 Erbacher Rd, Hampton from 2pm.

Internet bidding on memorabilia will start tomorrow night and run through until next Thursday.

Mr Hoffman said with 4000 individual lots, it was logistically impossible for a live  auction of that size to take place.

Classic cars and machinery will go to auction on September 24.
