Defeat for Australia in Cape Town

THE Australian U20 side has missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the IRB Junior World Championship following a shock 31-7 loss to France in Cape Town.

Australia's only points came from a try to Queensland Reds backrower Liam Gill in the first half.

France led 14-7 at half-time before running in two more converted tries in the second stanza.

The loss, coming on top of a win against Scotland and loss to Argentina - saw the Aussies finish a disappointing third in their pool.

Only the top four teams - Wales, Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand - will go on to the semi-finals.

Australia will meet France again in the play-off for fifth and sixth on Sunday
