New technique used on jobseekers

ANYONE who has ever been to a job interview will recall at least one question they found impossible to answer.

For those seeking a job at the Brolga Theatre's new restaurant Gusto, the question was a real doozy: "What 10 items would you take to the moon?"

Restaurateur Katie Clayton said the question was posed during a series of group activities for the 15 applicants during a group interview on Saturday.

"We ran through about eight or nine different activities, from ice-breakers to communication activities," Mrs Clayton said.

"We asked the group what they would take to the moon to see how they communicated with each other and as a team."

She said the unusual interview technique was known as Job Sports, and was designed to assess the personalities and problem-solving skills of potential staff.

"This kind of industry is all about personality, so with this kind of job interview, it's easy to see who will suit the job well," Mrs Clayton said.

"Everyone gave 110%, and we've created a couple of extra positions as a result."

The new restaurant will open in April, creating work for at least 10 staff, including an assistant manager and a chef.

Mrs Clayton said the menu would be contemporary with a focus on fresh, seasonal food.

"We have so much fantastic local produce here, like seafood, and we will be doing lots of salads with great flavours," she said.

"We're also using wines from a South Burnett winery, and their liqueurs in desserts."

The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday, and Sunday for breakfast and lunch.

Special deals will be available for theatre-goers, so head along and check out just how well the staff are fitting in.
