Country royalty set for Muster

COUNTRY music superstar Kenny Rogers will headline the Gympie Music Muster this year.

The 73-year-old American legend remains one of the biggest names in country music, with a career spanning half a century. His long-lasting hit The Gambler, with the famous lyrics; "you gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em", still resounds with younger generations as much as those who grew up listening to Rogers.

Hailed as one of the biggest country music artists to ever perform at the Gympie Music Muster, Rogers is expected to attract a massive crowd to Amamoor Creek State Forest Park in August. He will grace the Main Stage on the Sunday evening for the festival's grand finale.

The announcement was made yesterday at the festival's official launch in Brisbane, along with a line-up described as "awesome" by festival supporters and country music lovers.

Adding to the prestigious line-up are Australian icons John Williamson, The Black Sorrows, Brian Cadd and Russell Morris, as well as hit makers Lee Kernaghan, Shannon Noll, Beccy Cole and The Sunny Cowgirls.

THE announcement of the first round of artists confirmed for the Gympie Muster came as a pleasant surprise to festival supporters and country music fans.

An all-time favourite, Rogers was secured for the festival line-up by outgoing Muster CEO Vickii Cotter, who spent months in discussion with Rogers' Australian promoter to get him for the festival.

"I've been working really hard on the line-up since the end of last year's festival and I think this year is going to be really special, but it will be a magical moment when Kenny Rogers performs on the Main Stage," she said.

Known for instantly identifiable, sweetly raspy vocals and an extraordinary ability to vividly inhabit each song he performs, Kenny Rogers has sold more than 120 million records worldwide and recorded more than 65 albums during his storied 52 years in show business.

His long list of timeless classics includes an impressive 24 number one hits; The Gambler, Lady, Lucille and Islands in the Stream (a duet with Dolly Parton) are counted among them.

While Rogers has recorded albums in many genres of music - his latest was a gospel album, released in 2011 - two albums, The Gambler and Kenny, are considered some of the "most influential country albums ever", and his Greatest Hits album sold over 24 million copies worldwide to date.

He is America's eighth best-selling male recording artist of all time with one Diamond album, 19 Platinum albums and 31 Gold.
