Lucky escape for bench folk
THERE was no time for a rest in Tewantin's main thoroughfare of Poinciana Ave on Monday.
And it turned out to be a stroke of luck for the locals who normally sit on the bench outside the Guardian Pharmacy because they would not have been able to hold off the weight of a car that crashed into it about 12.30pm.
The car belonged to an elderly gentleman who was reversing his car into a parking space in front of the chemist. Paramedic staff at the scene said it appeared the driver had been unable to release the accelerator pedal.
The car became wedged between the parking sign and an electricity box, saving the building, the driver and any passers-by from injury.
After making an initial inspection, Energex staff gave the all-clear for a tow truck to remove the car. But they said further safety checks would be needed to ascertain any other damage.
Tewantin Noosa Towing's Roth Brennan said he was just about to park next to the driver when the accident occurred.
"We were just coming down the road and were about to pull up there," he said.
He said this was a rare event and the last incident of this sort he remembered was about 12 months ago.
"... When a car went through Godfrey's at Noosa Civic," Mr Brennan said.
