Richard Branson wants to defy council noise ruling on island

MAKEPEACE Island may be shaped like a heart, but there soon may be no love lost between its celebrity part-owner Sir Richard Branson and the Noosa Council.

This exclusive Noosa hideaway that first stole Sir Richard's affections when he and former Virgin Blue boss Brett Godfrey purchased it for staff getaways, is heading to the Planning and Environment Court.

At the heart of the dispute is a negotiated decision reached last December by the previous Sunshine Coast Council to allow the island to operate as a boutique resort.

However the applicant company, Makepeace Island (Operations) Pty Ltd, has refused to accept council restrictions for no more than 20 persons staying on the island, with no amplified music or entertainment audible noise to nearby residences between 10pm and 7am.

Staff recommended defending the council decision.

Council's development assessment co-ordinator Kerri Coyle said in her report that while the island was located in the Noosa River, the closest residential properties were about 200 metres to the west in Cambridge Ct, Tewantin.

"The area is residential in nature and is not located within the visitor mixed-use precincts of Gympie Terrace where some level of noise might be anticipated by residents," Ms Coyle said.

Planning committee member Councillor Joe Jurisevic asked: "Can we set capacity limits to 20 persons?"

Ms Coyle said council could, but when the matter went to trial council "will have to defend that ground for those conditions".

Committee chairman Councillor Frank Wilkie said there would not be many accommodation venues locally where they would have amplified music "between 10pm and 7am".

Ms Coyle said no.

"So it's not an unreasonable condition," Cr Wilkie said.

Mayor Noel Playford said that outcome would mean council enforcement officers "spending a lot of time in Cambridge Ct, I suggest".

Councillors will vote on the matter next week.
