People console each other outside St John Ambulance Whangarei in Kensington, after a critically injured man died.

A man dropped off in a critical condition at Whangarei St John Ambulance Station this morning has died.

Police say they were called to the station at approximately 6.40am and were informed about the situation.

Whangarei Police are now making enquiries and have established a cordon at the station.

Police are currently treating the death as suspicious and are working to identify the victim.

People arriving at the ambulance station are being interviewed by officers.

A number of people have gathered at the Western Hills Dr base, some consoling a man in a bloodied T-shirt.

A silver Mercedes is inside the police cordon at the front of the ambulance station.

A woman said she saw a man at the car with blood on his arm or shoulder and a group of people have arrived outside the cordon and are hugging each other.

St John Northland operations manager Tony Devanney said the front of the station was cordoned but the service would still use its ambulance by going through the back of the station, which also housed the Northland Emergency Rescue Helicopter.

A woman said she arrived nearby about 8am and saw police interviewing a number of people inside the cordon. The woman said she saw one man with blood on his arm or shoulder.

A Northern Advocate reporter at the scene said a number of upset people were gathering outside the cordon and many were hugging each other.

Police say a post mortem will likely be carried out tomorrow to establish the cause of death.
