McGuire tackles life after football

THREE months ago he played his 150th NRL game. Now he works part-time in a Sydney hardware store.

This is the life shift that Nambour-born former Queensland Origin player Casey McGuire is dealing as he grapples with life after rugby league.

The Kawana junior - a league professional for 14 years with Parramatta, Brisbane and Super League club Catalans - has admitted to finding life after footy "very hard" and "daunting".

McGuire ended his career at the club where it started when he ran out for Parramatta in its final game last season.

The 32-year-old ex-utility had wanted to play on but a new Eels offer was not forthcoming.

He said: "It is very hard, I suppose, for anyone who has done a job for a long time and it changes … So it's a little bit daunting at the moment.

"It's sort of a hard one, just because I've done it (played league) for so long."

Despite experiencing pangs of separation from league, McGuire said he was enjoying spending time with his family and was looking forward to life's next chapter.

It was "time to move on and do something different".

The problem is, he does not seem to know what that will be.

He said: "It was definitely lucky that I got to play for so long but it's time to do something else.

"Like I said, I don't really have much new (happening). I'm playing it month by month."

McGuire said "not really" when asked if he had spoken to a local club about a coaching role for next season and was unsure if coaching was for him.

He was reported that Newcastle club Port Stephens had been keen for him to coach its first grade side next season.

After linking with Parramatta at age 17, McGuire played most of his career in the halves and at hooker.

He believes his chances of re-signing with Parramatta for 2013 ended when he tore his pectoral tendon to the bone against St George in round 12 and was sidelined for 12 weeks.

McGuire spent three seasons at the Eels, playing two first grade games, before beginning a six-year, 115-game stint with the Broncos in 2001.

He played in the Broncos' 2006 premiership side.

A four-year 98-game association with the Catalans Dragons began in 2007, with him returning to the Eels in 2011.

He is engaged to his partner of 10 years, Sam, and they have two boys, Tighe, 4, and Kalin, 3.
