GRUNGE rock band Nirvana have topped Rolling Stone's Top 50 Alternative Albums of the '90s list.

The Seattle band's seminal album Nevermind beat out fellow '90s chart toppers Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Portishead, Sonic Youth and Beastie Boys.

Published in the magazine's August issue today, the list was determined by a 49-member voting panel including Aussies Chris Cheney (The Living End), MC Suffa (Hilltop Hoods), Ian Haug (Powderfinger) and Gotye and Silverchair manager John Watson.

"The '90s may have produced some questionable fashions, but the decade was responsible for some of the most groundbreaking, life-affirming music," said editor Rod Yates in a statement.

"It was a period where anything was possible.

"What was once underground became mainstream.

"This list celebrates the era and its greatest albums."

The '90s-themed edition of the magazine also features interviews with Tim Rogers (You Am I), Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins) and Ian MacKaye (Fugazi).
