Nouveau chefs test market
IT WASN'T a TV show, but junior market chefs had good ratings at Eumundi markets on Wednesday.
Some of the students in the two teams of three looked a tad shy as they focused on the production of an award-winning meal, but guided by local chefs Leigh Darlington and Phil Scott, Good Shepherd Noosaville students and New Look training students cooked up delicious dishes of Moreton Bay bugs, fig and fennel salad.
No wonder there was a touch of nerves. For some contenders it was a first time experience. But for others, such as Liam Waller in the New Look team, it could be his first step in a future career.
"I've done a bit of cooking before," he said quietly.
Leigh Darlington announced the winning team as the New Look training students.
However, Eumundi market manager Peter Homan pronounced all meals "divine."
The cooking competition brings students together from high schools and training colleges across the Sunshine Coast. For the market chef it's an opportunity for students to learn about food selection, preparation and presentation.
