Police dog bites joyrider during arrest

A man was bitten by a police dog after his attempts to evade the law in Rockville came to a sudden and painful end.

Police will allege two men fled from a car with stolen number plates in Rockville late last night before the Toowoomba Dog Squad nabbed the pair.

A police spokesman said a patrolling unit spotted the car on Mort St about 10.15pm Sunday with two people inside.

Officers attempted to intercept the car after checks found the number plates had been reported stolen, at which point the car turned into Donegal St at Rockville.

One of the men, 28, jumped from the car and fled into the yard of a nearby home while the second man, 34, ran into dense scrub in the area.

The dog squad found the 34-year-old hiding and, in the course of making an arrest, the man was bitten on the arm.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was transported to Toowoomba Hospital for treatment of the injury.

The Toowoomba man remained in hospital overnight as a precaution and has since been charged with a string of offences including dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to stop, driving without a licence, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, trespass, obstruct police, stealing and receiving tainted property.

He is due to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on November 8.

The 28-year-old East Toowoomba man has been charged with one count each of obstruct police and trespass, and is due to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on November 16.
