She said 'yes' to public proposal
THE most public marriage proposal on the Fraser Coast was a great success for Myles Simons, with a tearful "yes" from Gail Witt-Parry.
"I saw the sign and said: 'oh my gosh', then burst into tears," Gail said.
Drivers were beeping and waving their congratulations as they passed the billboard in Urraween.
"Movies have to create scenes like this, we get to live it for real," Myles said.
Gail said she knew Myles was something special when he offered to travel from New Zealand to Hervey Bay just to meet her in person after finding each other on an online dating site.
"I thought I'd give this guy a chance," she laughed.
Gail said the billboard proposal took her by surprise, though.
"I knew he was up to something but I thought he was planning something for my birthday party," she said.
The ring included the Maori symbol for eternity and a ruby.
The ruby came about through the Bible verse in Proverbs 31 which reads: "a wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies".
"In other words, they're hard to come by," Myles said.
Gail and Myles said they hadn't set a date for the wedding yet but were thinking about sending an open invitation for Hervey Bay to celebrate with them later this year.
Myles said he would also like to find out who owns the billboard so he can buy it from them.
