The Haven and QCWA give simple gift that means so much

FOR a lot of people, the basic everyday items like a toothbrush and deodorant are often taken for granted.

But for Ningi resident Jan (not her real name), being given toiletries once provided a feeling of self-worth and overwhelming joy.

The 45-year-old was a victim of domestic violence for years, leading her into the hands of The Haven, which assisted in finding her a safe house as well as providing her with a care bag filled with toiletries and other basic items.

The Haven is a Caboolture-based not-for-profit organisation that supports clients or persons at risk of homelessness.

The organisation started 27 years ago in response to an emerging need to provide a safe place for women and children escaping domestic violence.

To support The Haven, the Queensland Country Women's Association Caboolture branch has launched a project making care bags for women, like Jan, who need to escape from situations in a hurry.

QCWA Caboolture branch member Lenny Vernall said partnering with The Haven was the perfect opportunity to help women and children in need.

"The reality for some of these ladies is it's not a quick fix. Sometimes it goes on for months or years," she said.

"Even if the bags are just a temporary boost to assist someone in need of comfort, that's what it's all about."

Lifeline stores in North Lakes, Morayfield and Burpengary helped fill the bags with items such as gifts for women and children, alongside toothbrushes, deodorant and care teddies.

The Haven manager Gail Torrens said the bags made a huge difference to her clients.

"For many, the bags make them feel like a lady again. It builds up their self-confidence, their self-worth, and lets them know someone out there still cares, " she said.

For Jan, the care bags were a symbol of hope during one of the toughest times of her life.

"It was so overwhelming because all of these products in the bag were brand new," Jan said.

"I burst into tears with relief.

"For many people it's nothing, but when you have nothing, it's everything.

"It was a breath of fresh air, and it showed there's good out there no matter what you're going through."
