King of the thong chuck
TWO years ago Broome tried to steal one of Pomona's greatest claims to fame.
On Australia Day in 2010, the Sandgropers put their best foot forward, whipped off their rubber soles and had a crack at the World Thong Throwing record.
According to the world's best judges of aerodynamic open-air footwear the thong must be a size 10 that measures 29cm long and weighs 145-150g.
Despite the very best of hurls, Broome's best was a 30m chuck, well short of the unbeaten mark set at Pomona King of the Mountain Festival of 42.8m
This year's arm-straining action will have competitors heaving the throw-away thongs from noon.
Pomona King of the Mountain Festival this Sunday is home to Australia's most gruelling and historic mountain race, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, a 4.5km race up Mount Cooroora and back.
This year, at the 33rd event, the current record holder and winner of the mountain challenge six times in a row, Neil Labinsky, is going for the most consecutive wins in King of the Mountain history.
Pomona King of the Mountain Festival is a free fun day out for the whole family.
