FOR Peter Tuffield, retiring after 41 years of hard work was meant to be the chance to enjoy the good life.

But for the former NAB regional manager, the dream became a nightmare after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

A non-smoker, Mr Tuffield found it difficult to come to grips with the diagnosis that shattered his world 18 months ago.

"I was horrified, the last thing on my mind was cancer," he said.

"It's hard to accept that I have lung cancer because I never smoked."

When Mr Tuffield's lifelong friend Shane Talbot heard about his condition, he decided to tackle the Kokoda Trail in support of his mate.

Together they hope to raise $70,000 for the Australian Lung Foundation to aid research with their campaign, called Tuffy's Show Us Your Lungs Kokoda Challenge.
