Thurston stranded in New York as Sandy in full swing

NRL: North Queensland Cowboys star Johnathan Thurston was stuck in a New York hotel yesterday as Hurricane Sandy was in full swing.

The 29-year-old was on an end-of-season trip in the Big Apple with his partner, Samantha.

Teammate Matt Scott and his wife, Lauren, managed to fly out of the city just before all the flights were cancelled.

Thurston was only a few blocks away from a wrecked crane that was dangling perilously off the 67th floor of a building under construction on West 57th Street in Manhattan.

It is not the first time Thurston has been in the middle of a concerning weather event.

In the past three years he has been caught in Darwin's Cyclone Carlos and Townsville's Cyclone Yasi.

"I really wish they'd (destructive weather events) just leave us alone," Thurston said yesterday.

"Even though we've had a lot of fun so far, it's just put a bit of a dampener on the end of our little trip.

"We're not too sure what the go is at the moment. Our flight has been cancelled, so I suppose we'll just ring up tomorrow (today) and try and find out what the go is."
