POLICE are appealing for witnesses of a traffic crash at Mapleton on Saturday in which a 75-year-old local man died.

About 4.10pm, a silver 2003 Kia Sorrento station wagon had been travelling west through roadworks along Nambour-Mapleton Rd left the road surface and collided with a tree.

A 75-year-old man, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital following the crash but died a short time after.

Police in particular want to speak with a man who assisted at the scene and later contacted Kenilworth Police providing possible information.

They also wish to speak to the driver and occupants of a white sedan that was seen at the crash location at the time.

That vehicle was also heading west along Nambour-Mapleton Rd.

Anyone with information in relation to either the man or the vehicle sighted at the scene is urged to contact either the Sunshine Coast Forensic Crash Unit on 5471 7596, Policelink via 131 444, or Crime Stoppers.
