Young talent set for the big stage
SAILING: Sunshine Coast sailing young guns Reece Baguley, Lachlan Young and Mitch and Madi Kennedy are aiming to be crowned the best in the state this weekend.
The Mooloolaba Yacht Club youth team will contest the State Youth Match Race Championship on the Gold Coast.
The Mooloolaba outfit will take on four of the state's best youth teams at the Southport Yacht Club in a one-on-one format.
The four members have varied sailing backgrounds but coach Laurie Jarman is confident of them coming together as a unit.
Mitch Kennedy, who will lead the crew, has learnt his craft in the sabot and laser classes and is considered one of the rising stars of Australian sailing.
This week he returned from a training camp for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics along with his sister Madi. She has also grown up racing in lasers, while Baguley and Young's background is in the 420 class.
Jarman said: "They know each other really well and have been racing with each other at Maroochydore Sailing Club and at the Royal Yacht Squadron for a long time.
"They're an elite group of young kids."
