Students of Sunshine Beach State School have been enjoying the perfect little waves at Main Beach each Tuesday during the last term of the school year.

The school is dedicated to the surfing and surf awareness program, run by qualified instructors from Merrick’s Learn to Surf School.

Glynn Jones from Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club also assisted with showing students how to stay safe in the water when at the beach this summer, including how to perform a rescue.

Program coordinator Mark Robinson said every student had shown good progress with their surfing skills and had a fun time with their friends in the mornings before school.

“I’m really proud of our students for showing their enthusiasm and manners toward the program and our helpers,” Mark said.

“Naturally, conditions on some days were better than others, but like true surfers they turned up and enjoyed what was on offer.”

The program has been made even more successful by sponsorship from two local businesses.

Dane Wilson and Murray Walding, of Golden Breed Surf Shop, donated quality rash shirts in the school colours to promote sun safety while also giving the surfers a team look when out “carving up” the Main Beach peaks. Steve and Suzy Anderson, of IGA Noosa, also supplied a nutritious breakfast for the participants after a busy morning on the beach.

“It’s great to come back and have breaky at school with my friends and talk about all the great waves we caught,” said student Brodie Hogan.
