PREDICTIONS for one of the country’s hottest summers on record have prompted insurance provider Suncorp to warn Australians the best insurance against skin cancer is prevention.

Executive General Manager Personal Insurance Claims Jason McCracken said customers should place the same importance on protecting their skin against future damage as they would their car or a house.

“We live in a country where people understand they need to protect their assets due to unpredictable weather,” Mr. McCracken said.

“Unfortunately that same weather can cause serious damage to a person’s skin.

“Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world so it’s vital we all protect ourselves against the unforgiving sun.

“We understand there are situations in life you can’t predict or prepare for but 95 per cent of the time skin cancer is preventable.

“That’s why sun protection is the ultimate form of insurance and must become a part of the Australian way of life.”

The most recent National Sun Protection Survey found only one in three adults wore sunscreen when outdoors in peak UVR hours and one in seven adults admitted to getting sunburnt on a summer weekend^.

“Your skin is your largest organ and your health is your most important asset,” he said.

“Simple precautions such as applying sunscreen, staying out of the midday sun and wearing a hat can keep you safe from the sun’s deadly rays.

“In summer it can take just six minutes to burn so Suncorp has developed a number of SunWise tips to help keep Australians safe.”
  • Avoid – being outside when UV levels are highest between 10am and 3pm
  • Protect – your skin by wearing a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and sun protective clothing
  • Check – your skin regularly for unusual moles, freckles, blemishes or marks.

“If November’s scorching temperatures are any indication we are set for a long, hot summer and thousands of people are likely to be exposed to the harsh sun,” Mr. McCracken said.

“Insure your most important asset this season and ensure you’re around to enjoy the Australian summers to come.”
