Nick Guerts is in the top 20 for So You Think You Can Dance 2010.

JUST a few years ago, Nick Guerts couldn't even clap in time.

When friends decided to do a hip-hop class at the Sunshine Coast Academy of Dramatic Arts he went along for fun - with a dance career the farthest thing from his mind.

Last night, Nick was named one of the chosen few who made it through to the top 20 in So You Think You Can Dance.

He will now dance live in front of Australia as the public decides who will be the nation's favourite dancer.

His exciting journey, which has included performing with the Black Eyed Peas, began right here on the Coast when SCADA director Brian Hewitt saw something in Nick that no one had ever seen before.

“He was totally raw back then, but now he is amazing,” Brian said.

“But the intelligent way he moved and his musicality was incredible.”

In Nick's mind, he has a lot to thank Brian for, because without his influence Nick's path may have taken a very different course.

“Brian took me under his wing, he was like a father figure to me, he was very supportive and understood I was a teenager going through a hard time,” Nick explained.

“Even though I had never danced before he really wanted to help me get through and keep growing, he wanted to see me reach the potential he saw.”

Nick is now very close to reaching that potential and Brian believes he can go all the way.

“His dancing is amazing and its pure drive, focus and determination,” Brian said.

“He is very artistic and his sensitivity and emotion comes through his work which is rare, especially in a male.”

After last night's episode where Nick was named as one of the top 20, viewers will need to wait until Wednesday night where the top 20 will showcase their dance abilities in front of a live audience and Nick can't wait.

“I have mixed emotions, there is a lot of nerves obviously, but the excitement it starting,” he said.
