After dropping points last week against Beerwah, the Noosa Premier Men’s football team was fired up and ready for the game on Saturday night against local rivals, Nambour Yandina United. However, they were made to pay for defensive lapses and found themselves 2-0 down, both goals being scrappy but nonetheless counting on the scoresheet.
Noosa may have been down but they were certainly not out of the contest and when Luke May fired in a superb left-foot shot from 25 metres, the deficit was halved and the tempo doubled. The home team swarmed forward in search of the equaliser and when a penalty was awarded, it seemed certain Noosa would go on to win the game. Unfortunately, Dan Upton’s shot was saved and this gave NYU the belief they could hold on to their lead.
As the game wore on, Noosa continued to press for an equaliser and the visitors scored a decisive third goal on the counter-attack. The final score was 3-1 and while the team was disappointed with the result, which makes it more difficult for them to chase down a top spot, they can still be confident in their ability to beat any team in the finals series. The reserves also suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat.
One winner on the night was the Sunshine Coast Hospice, which received a donation from the club from funds raised during a World Cup sweep. This weekend Noosa’s premier and reserve-grade teams have the bye, which will give the squad an opportunity to recuperate and prepare for the remaining games this season.
On Friday night the ladies’ team did not find the net for the first time in their 0-0 draw with Cooroora.
The over-35(2)s lost 1-0 to Maroochydore and the 35(1)s beat a spirited NYU 4-0. Both teams are at home again this Friday night.
Good luck to the under-13s who only need one more win from their remaining four games to secure the title of champions.
The under-14s hope to lead the way for the premier men’s team and go past Buderim at the top of their ladder.
In any event, finals football is assured (and possible) for a number of the club’s junior and senior teams this year.
This weekend the under-6s have a carnival at Maleny.
