Happy-go-lucky mum lost in crash

The champagne was on ice and three friends were just waiting for the final member of their tight-knit girls group to arrive before the usual laughter and merriment began.

Peregian Springs woman Rhondda Alexander never made it.

The 66-year-old was killed instantly when her green Saab motor vehicle crashed on the Sunshine Motorway last week shortly after 1pm.

Her car and a white VW van collided just south of the Coolum roundabout.

Friend and neighbour Patsy Martin said she and friends Nola, Faye and Sue were concerned because their good friend Rhondda was never late.

Mrs Martin said a neighbour gave them the news in person a short time later.

“Rhondda was the type of person everyone wanted to be,” Mrs Martin said.

“Every day she would get up and say ‘Happy Monday, happy me’.”

Mrs Martin said Rhondda her friend and neighbour of five years had just returned from a three-month holiday in Greece with her Greek husband of 40-plus years, Michael.

“She would often say he was her Greek god, on other days she would joke he was her god on Greek.”

Michael and Rhondda have a daughter in Sydney and a son in Hong Kong.

Mrs Martin said she believed the couple’s daughter had joined Mr Alexander at their Peregian Springs home.

“They never argued and were so loving towards each other,” she said.

The Alexanders were regular participants in the Salvation Army Adopt-a-Family appeal, according to Mrs Martin.
