Jetty's future still in doubt

The Boreen Point jetty has been closed due to safety concerns. Residents hope the icon will be restored.

What was once the focal point of the Boreen Point township has now been shut down to residents due to safety concerns.

The jetty that was a long-standing hive of activity in the area had been off-limits since May this year and there was no indication that the deteriorating relic would ever be repaired or rebuilt.

Ian Vary had holidayed in the area since 1994 before later making it his permanent home.

“(The jetty) used to be the lifeblood of the place,” he said.

“I guess it’s really where all the kids would play.

“And I just hope they eventually return it to its former glory.”

He said it was a sad signal that this jetty was now a restricted area while other parts of Noosa were being repeatedly fixed up.

“It’s the whole village here, it doesn’t get the treatment that Noosa does,” Mr Vary said.

“And we just haven’t got a clue what’s happening.”

According to the Department of Transport which owns the jetty, it has been shut down due to structural and safety considerations.

“The Department of Transport and Main Roads and Sunshine Coast Regional Council are presently investigating potential repair methods and their associated costs.”

A spokesperson from the Sunshine Coast council said council would wait to see what the Department of Transport wanted to do.
