In a belief that you can’t go past a true original, the stallholders in Eumundi’s first markets are looking to distinguish themselves from their rivals.
The Market And Traders Eumundi group has set its sights on differentiating the “original Eumundi Markets” with signs reflecting their slogan “we make it, bake it, sew it, grow it”.
“The great majority of visitors to the Eumundi Market have no idea that the famous icon is actually made up of various different markets – some privately owned and some run by local community associations,” MATE president Judy Ditter said.
Ms Ditter has put her own dispute over her banishment from the market, and that of MATE committee member Wendy Duff, to one side to promote the stallholder initiative.
She said the aim was to set the Eumundi and District Historical Association-run market apart from the Eumundi and District Community Association, Parkside, Pavilion and Eumundi Square counterparts.
“Not only are there many different markets, but due to an historical quirk, some sections change positions on Wednesdays and Saturdays,” Ms Ditter said.
The new signage system for the EHA stallholders also provides colour-coded maps explaining where the Original Eumundi Markets begin and end.
“When I was a stallholder I often had people asking me where particular stalls were located,” Ms Ditter said. “People would visit a stall on a Wednesday and expect it to be there when they came back on a Saturday.
“The feedback from both stallholders and customers has been fantastic.”
The signs have coloured sashes to show which row visitors are in. These colours are further identified on maps available at Original Eumundi Market stalls.
