Flathead on the bite in river

In the Noosa River this week, flathead have been in good numbers and size, with some excellent “catch and release” results.

Lauren Flynn and her brother Rhys were excited by the quality 77cm flathead they caught and released along the Gympie Terrace stretch of the river on the weekend.

In the Noosa River this week, flathead have been in good numbers and size, with some excellent “catch and release” results along the Gympie Terrace stretch, the Woods Bays and at the river mouth.

The better size whiting are starting to move through the system and best targeted on live worms and live yabbies. The shallow drop-offs at Munna Point, Culgoa Point, the Frying Pan and the river mouth are all good areas for whiting.

Thumper bream have been on the bite in the Woods Bays and around the Sheraton Bridge at night. Also in the Woods Bays are golden trevally, cale cale trevally and big eye trevally at dawn and dusk.

Upstream along the ski run, at first light there have been school jewfish going for soft plastics and bream off the beach at the ferry crossing. Offshore, the outer reefs are consistently producing a wide range of species.

North Reef has been well patronised. Good catches of mixed reef fish, with the standouts amberjack, cobia and pearl perch.

Sunshine Reef produced the odd Spanish mackerel, quality snapper and coral trout among mixed reefies and Laguna Bay was thick with schools of pilchards.

The surf beaches were almost flat but a few good gutters have formed along the North Shore. From Teewah north a mixed bag of flathead, bream, tarwhine, chopper tailor and whiting.

The better size tailor 2-3kg drawn in by the pilchard schools, were taking metal slugs along the camp site stretches.
