Laguna Bay full of the bait fish

Laguna Bay has been alive with large schools of pilchards, especially along the North Shore surf line where bonito, tuna and spotted mackerel were caught.

Jason Fechner, from Brisbane, boated this colourful 4.5kg coral trout while on a half-day Cougar One charter to North Reef.

Conditions on the Coast reefs were ideal this week and look good for the weekend.

Laguna Bay has been alive with large schools of pilchards, especially along the North Shore surf line where bonito, tuna and spotted mackerel were among the bait fish.

Sunshine Reef has been relatively quiet with only the odd report of squire, snapper and sweetlip while North Reef was produced quality coral trout, maori cod, squire, moses perch, pearl perch, cobia and venus tusk fish.

Big sinkers were needed out wide where the current was running hard, with good catches of cobia, pearl perch and quality snapper reported at Barwon Banks.

Wide of the banks the catch was excellent: amberjack, thumper pearl perch and snapper.

There has been plenty of coastal surf beach activity this week, especially on North Shore.

Large bream, schools of tuna and spotted mackerel were all successfully targeted along the Teewah gutters.

Further north, off the rocks at Double Island Point, there was snapper, cobia, tailor and trevally on large metal slugs and soft plastics.

Northern Sunshine Beach produced the odd jewfish and quality tailor after high tide in the evening, and flathead, bream, dart and whiting.

Marcus Beach produced whiting, Peregian produced tarwhine, dart and whiting, and Castaways Beach was the spot for bream and dart.

In the river, early morning along the ski run, diamond and tea-leaf trevally and flathead responded to soft plastics, whiting are well spread, and the better-size whiting responding to surface poppers in the Frying Pan.

The odd big mangrove jack has been on the prowl at night around Munna Point structures, with big bream and trevally at or near the Sheraton bridge and the inner Woods bays at dawn.

At Borumba Dam bass are schooling in the main basin.
