PARENTS sending their kids back to school are urged to consider sun safety when shopping for new uniforms.

To help guard children from the sun's harmful rays, clothing label Stubbies has developed a school uniform range offering a maximum UV protection rating of UPF50+.

Stubbies product manager Josie Mileto said UV rating usually peaked daily between 10am and 3pm - times when most students are outdoors enjoying recess, lunch and sport activities.

Therefore, uniforms played a vital role in protecting children from excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation, she said.

"It is extremely crucial for children between the ages of five and 12 years to be protected from as much sun damage as possible, in order to prevent the long-term risk of cancer," she said.

"The Stubbies 50 + range is the ideal uniform for sun protection at school and should be teamed up with a pair of sunglasses and the regular application of sunscreen."

A Stubbies survey of 983 Australian parents of primary school aged kids, found that only 20% of parents actually considered sun safety as an important requirement when buying school uniforms for their children.

Pac Brands fabrication technician Graham Quinton said research and planning was put into determining the best materials for the Stubbies sun smart schoolwear range to offer maximum UV protection, comfort and durability.

The collection, endorsed by the Cancer Council, is designed to offer maximum UV protection for a child's skin, teamed with a close-knit fabric that stops up to 97% of the dangerous UV rays.

Other key features of the Stubbies range include scratch-free labels, underarm cooling vents and adjustable waist bands, purpose built to handle the rough and tumble of the playground.

In celebration of its 40th birthday and in an effort to promote the need for the incorporation of sunglasses in school uniform policies, Stubbies is offering online customers a free pair of kids sunglasses with each school uniform bought.

The sunglasses comply with Australian standards, have category 3 lenses and offer high sun glare reduction and the highest standard of UV protection.
