Hamish Dods won the $50 Davo’s ‘Fish of the Week’ prize with the 19.3kg Spanish mackerel he trolled up at Little Halls Reef.
NOW that all the fresh water has been flushed over the close-in reefs they are starting to fire in a big way.
Heaps of sweet lip, squire and tusk fish have been hitting baits and soft plastics.
We have seen a number of large Spanish mackerel caught and these have come from little halls and Sunshine reefs.
The spotty mackerel are still not around in any numbers but, for those who put the time in, they are coming back in with a feed.
The river has been fishing well and this should continue over the next week.
Large flathead can be found around the river mouth and if you concentrate your fishing on the run out tide you should be able to land some.
Try drifting along the edges of the sand banks with medium size soft plastics and just give them a twitch every couple of seconds.
The bream are on the chew at the moment with some people landing up to 20 a session; just remember the legal size is 25cm.
There are still some good tailor to be caught around Woods Bay and Munna Point and if you want a feed of mud crabs, there are heaps of good bucks (males) around with some people getting their bag limit (10) without too much trouble.
On the beaches whiting are around in numbers with a few elbow slappers among them.
Live worms and pipes are the number one bait.
There are also some good concentrations of dart around and if you find them it's great fun on light gear and it is also a great way to teach kids how to fish the beaches.
Yellow belly are making their presence known at Borumba Dam.
Most are getting caught on deep diving lures while trolling along the steep banks.
Lake Macdonald has seen a fair amount of bass caught, mainly opposite the botanic gardens and along the bubble trail.
