Severe storm warning current for Qld

AS of 9pm on Tuesday, a severe thunderstorm warning remains current for people in parts of Queensland.

A SEVERE thunderstorm warning remains current for people in parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Northwest, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast Forecast Districts.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning.

It said severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones over the next several hours in parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts. Locations which may be affected include Gympie, Bundaberg, Emerald, Rockhampton, Clermont, Blackwater, Moranbah, Gold Coast and Coolangatta.

Damaging winds are expected to affect  parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Northwest and Central West districts. Locations which may be affected include Winton, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Dajarra Hotel, Urandangie, Duchess Hotel, Selwyn and Mckinlay Roadhouse over the next several hours.

A severe thunderstorm warning for Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts has been cancelled.

On Tuesday there were reports of significant wind damage to buildings at Cooroy between 3pm and 3:30pm. Several businesses in Cooroy had their roofs torn off.

More than 37mm of rainfall in 15 minutes was recorded at Tewantin at 3:25pm.

Rainfall of 54mm in an hour was recorded at Bald Knob (near Landsborough) at around 2:30pm.

A wind gust of 101kph was recorded at The Monument (northwest Queensland) at 1:48pm.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
