A charity event and film screening of Miss Representation. This is an event you do not want to miss. This will be a once off screening on the Coast.
Miss Representation first premiered in the documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival where it caught the eye of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. It made its television debut as part of the OWN documentary film club in October 2011, with over 1.3 million people tuning in to its multiple airings. The film explores how the media’s portrayal of women has led to the underrepresentation of females in positions of power and influence. “This documentary has been screened in Sydney and the feedback and response has been incredible,” says Marina Passalaris, who is the director of Beautiful Minds, a life skills course for teenage girls. Every day Passalaris works with young women to improve their leadership skills and confidence, and she now has the licence to show the documentary to Sunshine Coast audiences at this one off event. Marina Passalaris will present the film at the Maroochydore cinemas before leading a panel to discuss it. The panel will consist of Bermingham Books director Rachael Bermingham, Campaign Group director Rebecca Grisman, MWP fashion editor Dianna Mullins and Kim Edwards, the director of Sea English Academy International. There will be several items up for raffle – with all money raised on the night, going to support a local charity The Sonshine Sanctuary, who provides crisis accommodation for women and children made homeless by domestic violence. Sydney couture boutique Jatine, a major sponsor for the event, is giving away a $100 gift voucher for online shopping for each lady attending. Marina Passalaris says, “The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. Miss Representation includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Jackson Katz, Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave audiences shaken and armed with a new perspective “It is a fascinating look at the way the media objectifies females. It is educational and very thought provoking. Mums can bring their daughters to help teens understand how the media manipulates images of women. It’s not just for adults.” The screening will take place on Thursday October 4, from 6.30 pm to 9.30pm at Cinema 2, Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore. Early bird tickets are $37 and include a gift bag.
