Abbott rates his four-nation tour a success

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott said his four-nation world trip has been constructive and helped reinforced Australia's global position.

He has spent the past two weeks meeting with leaders in Indonesia, France, Canada and the United States ahead of the Brisbane G20 Summit later this year.

Mr Abbott, who addressed a host of mining, resources and energy executives in Houston, Texas at the weekend, said he wanted Australia to become a centre of cheap energy.

He said plentiful energy from reliable suppliers like Australia and the United States was essential for global growth.

"From the other side of the ocean Australia shares with you a common interest in powering that future with abundant and reliable energy," he said.

"Affordable, reliable energy fuels enterprise and drives employment.

"It is the engine of economic development and wealth creation.

"Australia should be an affordable energy superpower, using nature's gifts to the benefit of our own people and the wider world."

Mr Abbott reaffirmed his government's commitment to abolish the carbon tax telling the audience it had damaged our economy and increased energy costs for businesses and families.

"We are replacing it with a $2.55 billion fund that will prioritise cost-effective, targeted means to reduce emissions such as afforestation, soil carbon and cleaner power stations," he said.

"It is an incentive-based approach which will support Australian businesses and households to lower their energy costs at the same time as reducing Australia's emissions."

Mr Abbott is heading home this week via Hawaii where he will lay a wreath at Pearl Harbor and meet with Pacific Command officials.
