Justice Minister denies authority merger about cutting costs

A MOVE to bring two Australian crime and justice authorities under one banner is not about cutting costs or staff, Justice Minister Michael Keenan says.

Mr Keenan has announced legislative changes to move the Australian Institute of Criminology into the Australian Crime Commission, changes expected to be introduced at Federal Parliament in coming weeks.

He said the criminology institute would be incorporated into the ACC as an independent research branch and be known as the Crime and Justice Research Centre.

Mr Keenan said the changes were not about cutting costs or staff.

"It's about creating a unified workforce incorporating staff of both agencies," he said in a statement.

Mr Keenan said the changes would enhance support for law enforcement in counter terrorism efforts and bolster Australia's response to serious and organised crime.
