Springborg announces new rural health delivery framework

BETTER health services could soon be on the way for rural and regional Queenslanders, after Health Minister Lawrence Springborg announced a new service delivery framework yesterday.

Mr Springborg spoke at the Rural Doctor's Association of Queensland conference in Mackay, outlining a new service delivery model for regional areas.

He said the new Rural and Remote Framework plan would be "the foundation of bringing back services and building on community needs."

The minimum service model will focus on better aligning staffing and resource levels to the needs of individual communities.

"Small, nurse led facilities in places like Morven, through to larger rural facilities which conduct a range of more specialised services, will be included in the framework," Mr Springborg said.

"From today, Queenslanders and clinicians will have a direct say in the creation of better local health services, under a new consultation framework."

Mr Springborg said Theodore's Dr Bruce Chater, who has played a key role in Central Queensland during floods, would lead the consultation phase for the new model.

"The community engagement starts from today because I want to bed this down and get on with ensuring minimum standard models, including staffing models, begin sooner rather than later," he said.

While the announcement did not detail specific initiatives for individual towns, Mr Springborg said he would have more to say in Cairns this week.
