Team Compass brings 40 carers to the Community Run Festival

A SPECIAL group of competitors will step on to the big stage this weekend, excited to show they deserve their place in the Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Run Festival.

Team Compass has nominated 40 runners for the two-kilometre Alexandra Headland to Cotton Tree and return leg of the big race, giving students of school special education units as well as older athletes with disabilities a chance to compete.

Another 40 carers and support runners will also take part.

Compass Institute co-ordinator DJ McGlynn said everyone was absolutely excited to be involved.

"It's inspiring just to watch some of these kids day to day," he said. "It will be absolutely amazing to see them on the big stage. Just to see everyone with a smile on their faces will be fantastic."

Mr McGlynn said other sporting events should look to the marathon lead for ways to start to include people of all abilities.

"I encourage the families of the competitors to be involved."
