Jail after man drags woman by hair and puts foot on throat

A 35-YEAR-old man has been sent to jail after dragging his partner by her hair and attempting to choke her by putting his foot on her throat.

The man pleaded guilty in Maryborough Magistrates Court on Monday to contravening a domestic violence order.

The court the man was involved in an argument with the victim, his then-partner, at a Tiaro home on February 7.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Chris Elder said the man dragged the woman down a hallway by her hair and placed his foot on her throat to choke her.

Sgt Elder said the woman told police she pretended to pass out so she could escape to a nearby bathroom.

He said the woman then called out to neighbours for help.

Sgt Elder said when police arrived they heard the woman's calls for help and assisted her.

The man was found by police hiding behind the lounge chair.

Sgt Elder said it was the man's third similar offence in three years.

The man's lawyer Travis George told the court the pair had a troubled relationship.

"The relationship has been volatile for a long period of time," he said.

Maryborough Magistrate John Smith said the man had six prior domestic violence contraventions on his history.

Mr Smith sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment, taking into account the 15 days in custody already served.

He will be eligible for parole on June 10.
