A history of poetry in Bulcock family

MORE than 30 Caloundra Family History Research members were present to hear guest speaker, member and local historian Paul Seto give his presentation on "Emily Hemans Bulcock OBE - Our Forgotten Poet".

Paul told the February meeting that his research had found that Emily, daughter of a school master, was born at Tinana near Maryborough.

Coming from a literary family, her unusual middle name of Hemans was in honour of the famous poet Felicia Hemans (1793-1835).

In 1903, Emily married Robert Albert Bulcock, son of one of Caloundra's original settlers Robert Bulcock.

They farmed at Razorback, now Montville.

Widowed in 1924, Emily lived in Caloundra and Brisbane.

When she died, she had been a published poet for more than 80 years, during which time she wrote more than 1000 poems.

Her brother Vance Palmer won the 1959 Miles Franklin Literary Award for his novel The Big Fellow and Emily was awarded an OBE in 1964 for her contribution to poetry.
