Summer salads might not be same with mango shortfall

THE humble fruit salad just might not be the same this summer.

A core ingredient, mango, has suffered a setback in the Northern Territory this growing season.

Disease has resulted in a 40% drop in stock from the Top End, according to one Coolum fruit and vegetable wholesaler.

"Disease has them been dropping off the trees. They've been stressed by the weather," SunCoast Fresh owner Graeme Twine said.

"Last year was a bumper crop but not so much this year."

Mr Twine said Queensland farmers would start harvesting in three weeks.

He said those mangoes had not been affected by disease yet but prices will be up.

Stone fruit, on the other hand, will be in good supply this season, Mr Twine said.

"They will be sweeter. The quality of fruit we'll get in the next few weeks will be the best we've seen in ages."

Mr Twine said plums were described to him by one farmer as tasting like "lolly water" this year.

"They'll be awesome this season," he said.

Unfortunately, apricots will be in short supply. "We won't see as many this season. They're not having as good a year," Mr Twine said.

He predicted cherries would be in stores a few weeks after the Melbourne Cup. "At this point it's too hard to say but it should be a reasonable season for cherries."

A steady supply of lychees has begun to flow in but they will be at a relatively high price until after Christmas.
