Why is this pizza sending fans quacking mad?
YOU put what on your pizza?
Augello's Ristorante and Pizzeria has done it again, tantalising tastebuds with a combination you would never think would work.
The Mooloolaba restaurant took out the Australian Pizza Championships with their Duck Sushizza - rice pizza base with teriyaki duck, micro salad, teriyaki aioli and mandarin.
"I'm very fortunate I've got a brigade of chefs who think outside the square," Augello's co-owner Simon Best said.
"I sit down with them and they tell me a reason why we can't do something and we come up with a reason why we can.
"I also got advice from a Japanese chef with this one."
Mr Best and his team have spent "a good year" experimenting with different rice bases.
"I've always wanted to do something with duck, it's my favourite meat," he said.
"The pizza's different, no one else is doing this stuff in the world.
"Teriyaki micro salad with mandarin: who's coming up with that? We just think different and it's endless what you can put on a pizza."
Co-owner Billy Moore admitted even he questioned the combination.
"When he describes it, you shake your head, 'That won't work'," said the former State of Origin great.
"It's rice, but once you taste it, you get the crunch and the creaminess inside.
"But the base is as important as the toppings...what he has the ability to do is make the whole pizza work."
While Mr Moore was eating more than his words after the win, the Queenslander was also nursing his pride after New South Wales took out the first State of Origin game.
"You go to Sydney to win the pizza competition and then a day later go to Brisbane and we get beat," he said.
Augello's has now won the national titles three times.
Augello's award-winning pizza features a rice base, teriyaki duck, micro salad, teriyaki aioli and mandarin.
It will be on the menu from today.
