YOUR LETTERS: Bond deserves credit for America’s Cup triumph

THE death of Alan Bond is a sad loss for our country.

Who could ever forget his financial backing of the America's Cup bid in 1983, when Australia finally won the coveted prize.

This would have to go down as one of Australia's greatest ever sporting achievements.

It was a moment which will always be etched in history, for as a nation we were so very proud.

Everywhere you went that day everyone was just so happy and singing "I Come From a Land Down Under".

Sunshine Plaza, then The Sands shopping centre, was full of shoppers singing "we won the Cup!".

People were out and about and it was total euphoria on the streets and everywhere that day.

Even our then Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, made now famous comments pertaining to the win. .

Although Mr Bond fell from grace a decade later, he should always be remembered as a man who, combined with the enormous talents of John Bertram and his crew, achieved something no-one else has ever been able to.

Australia's brilliant victory of winning the America's Cup.
