Teen pig hunter shoots himself in arm
ALONE, isolated and with a gaping bullet wound through his forearm, a Darling Downs teenager knew he would have to get moving if he was going to survive.
A pig hunting trip turned disastrous for an 18-year-old Kooroongarra man who accidentally shot himself on Saturday.
Millmerran police officer-in-charge Sergeant Steve Ryan said the man had been shooting wild pigs on a Kooroongarra property, south of Millmerran, when he was seriously injured.
Sgt Ryan said a bullet from a .223 calibre rifle went through the man's forearm about 4.15pm.
"He managed to telephone 000 from where he was and managed to drive to a friend's farmhouse, where the lady of the house saved him from further injury with very good first aid," Sgt Ryan said.
The man drove up to 10km before he reached the house.
Sgt Ryan drove the ambulance from the property while a paramedic treated the teenager until they reached Toowoomba Hospital.
The teenager was then taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane where he yesterday remained in a stable condition.
Sgt Ryan reiterated the importance of gun safety and first aid knowledge.
"Police urge all people using firearms to be extremely careful."
