Asylum seekers intercepted

ANOTHER boat with 31 asylum seekers on board was intercepted on Thursday night as the 54 survivors of the sunken boat off the Indonesian coast were transferred back to the south-east Asian nation on Friday.

After the extensive Indonesian search and rescue operation continued off the Java coast, grave fears remained for nearly 100 asylum seekers, after the boat they were in sunk.

The lucky 54 survivors were saved from certain death by seven merchant and cargo ships travelling through the area which joined the desperate search on Thursday.

A spokesman for Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said the remaining survivors were currently being transferred to Indonesia.

The latest boat arrival came on Thursday night and was intercepted north of Cocos Islands.

The 31 passengers were on Friday being transferred to Australian authorities on the island.
