Author Kylie Kaden draws on her Coast experiences

CAMPING on the Sunshine Coast with her family when she was growing up gave Kylie Kaden lots of happy memories.

It also gave her the perfect background for her debut novel. Losing Kate is largely set on the Coast. Cooloola National Park and Double Island Point play pivotal roles in the story about a girl, Kate, who disappears from a Coast beach.

It is described as a romantic love story with epic suspense and mystery.

"A lot of inspiration came from my time on the Coast," Mrs Kaden, a Brisbane mother of three, said.

The book came to life over a year while Mrs Kaden was on maternity leave.

"When baby was asleep, I'd do an hour here and there to keep my mind active," she said.

She studied psychology and has always been interested in relationships - an integral part of her novel.

She sent in the first few chapters to Random House, which requested a full manuscript.

Days later, she had a contract.

"I didn't expect the success so quickly," Mrs Kaden said.

Random House Australia fiction publisher Beverly Cousins said it was her first "Eureka'' moment in her 25-year career.

Mrs Kaden and her family continue to holiday on the Coast to this day.

She, her husband and their three sons will spend part of the Easter break on the Coast.

She is already working out on a draft for her next novel.

Losing Kate is due out on Tuesday.

  • Take some courses at the Queensland Writer's Centre. I took classes on the basics on novel writing and editing.
  • Join a writing club. Can be a great way to meet like-minded people.
  • Follow your dreams. I had no formal training in writing but managed to fit it in with three kids.
