UPDATE: SUNSHINE Coast water police have confirmed they have found the owner of the mystery backpack that was spotted in the surf off Moffat Beach on Sunday.

A water police spokesman said the mother of the backpack owner contacted police to let them know he was ok.

He said three boys including the bag owner were surfing in the area for a few hours however when they had returned to shore they found the tide had come in and taken away their bag and shoes.

EARLIER TODAY: WATER Police have asked for the owner of a backpack and shoes spotted in the surf off Moffat Beach yesterday afternoon to contact police.

A surfer located the items, tipping off police and sparking an extensive, preliminary search for a possible missing person.

A helicopter and surf skis were sent out to search the area, but nobody had been located by late yesterday.

It was believed the items had washed off the rocks due to the increased tides.

However police have asked the owner of the items to get in touch, so they can ensure there was no person lost at sea.
