REMEMBER Fraser Island?

It's that 1840 sq km of pristine wilderness that sits right on our doorstep.

Sometimes we forget it's there, and so easily accessible.

And now is the perfect time for Fraser Coast residents to rediscover the magic of the world's largest sand island with a range of deals currently on offer.

Kingfisher Bay Resort Group general manager David Hay said locals were being lured to Fraser through discounted barge fares, resort stays and tours.

"Unfortunately there are a lot of people who live in our region who have never been to Fraser Island," Mr Hay said.

"Fraser Island is a place of exceptional beauty and we believe it has long been under-utilised by Coast locals for a number of reasons, including perceptions of cost."

He said residents with proof of address could save up to half price on off-peak barge travel from River Heads, Wanggoolba Creek and Kingfisher Bay Resort.

The system would work similar to an airline, he said, in that cheap seats were able to be offered on the less popular services.

From now until November, locals can also stay at Eurong Beach Resort for just $69 per person per night, which includes barge travel.

And those who wanted to take visiting family members to the island can receive discounts through the Fraser Coast STAYcations program.

For barge discounts, call 1800 FRASER and to stay at Eurong, contact the resort direct.
