BHP named most transparent CSG fracking operator

AUSTRALIAN mining giant BHP Billiton has been named the most transparent of the globe's 30 biggest companies involved in coal seam gas hydraulic fracturing operations.

The firm topped the Investor Environmental Health Network's 2015 report about disclosure on the environmental risks of their CSG operations.

BHP scored 32 out of a possible 39 points, but 70% of the 30 companies on the list, including ExxonMobil and Chevron, were given "fail" marks.

The Disclosing the Facts report rated them on measures such as how much information they released to investors about chemical use and fracking risks from water management.

It found BHP, Apache, Hess and Noble were the best at reporting environmental risk to shareholders.

Carrizo Oil and Gas, Whiting Petroleum and Continental Resources reported the least.

The report said more information was needed - particularly about local and social impacts.
