Liquor giant ALH moves in on lucrative Ipswich territory

THE same hotel and liquor industry powerhouse that transformed the Racehorse Hotel has its sights set on Yamanto.

Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group - better known as ALH - recently purchased the popular Yamanto Tavern from owners Clive and Maryanne Johnson. Although neither party would comment on the sale price, other media have put it around the $21 million mark.

The sale includes the adjoining Harry Browns bottle shop, positioned opposite the tavern at the Yamanto shopping village on Warwick Rd.

It does not include the Johnsons' other pub, the PA Hotel in Booval.

ALH spokesman David Curry said the Yamanto Tavern was well positioned to be a successful prospect for the company, which owns hundreds of pubs and bottle shops across the country.

"We are always looking for good pubs in good areas," Mr Curry said. "Given the size of ALH Group, we are on the lookout for any properties that come on the market."

The official takeover was expected to take place in October this year.

Mr Curry said it would be "business as usual" at the Yamanto Tavern, with no specific plans to change the way the venue operates.

ALH also owns the Redbank Plains Tavern and Springfield Tavern in Ipswich, in addition to an array of venues in all areas of Queensland.

Mr Johnson was away on holidays yesterday and was unavailable for comment.
